How to prepare for your maternity photography session

Do you have your mind set in making memorable images for this stage in your life? Well done! If you don’t know where to start with your planning for your session, then this is a little guide to help you plan for your Maternity photography session.

Five tips to help you plan your maternity photoshoot.

  • Aim to schedule your photography session around your 30th week onwards.

  • Consider having your maternity photoshoot during the morning up to 10am or late during the winter months or after 6pm during the summer months in Melbourne. During these times of the day, the light is very pleasant and ideal for photography

  • Keep your latest ultrasound handy or bring it with you for your maternity session, so that we can use it during your session. This is a great element to consider that will allow me to tell your story.

  • While planning for your session, consider if you would like to show your bare tummy. If you have your heart set on this type of images then consider having your session at the beach and remember to avoid clothing that will have elastic around your waist to avoid any marks. Bikinis are a great way to display your tumy.

  • I love to create a variety of images for you and some of them will be close up, so consider getting your nails done for your maternity photoshoot, so they look their best on those detail shots.

How should I style my maternity photoshoot?

You and your belly should be the ones getting all the attention during your maternity photography shoot. It is best to consider your clothes so that they are not distracting and they work well with the outfits of the other members of your family taking part on the photography session. Here is a list of suggestions for you to consider when selecting an outfit for your photography session:

  • Try to select solid colours that complement the outfits of the other members of your family. Darker skin tones work well with bright colours like salmon and aqua and fair skin tones work well with pastel colours.

  • Avoid large patterns when possible.

  • Black clothing will give you a slim silhouette but it can also make it hard to notice your tummy when shooting from the front.

  • Consider wearing fitting clothes, these will allow your tummy to be shown and will give you a nice silhouette.

  • Long sleeve and mid sleeve tend to be the most flattering in most cases.

  • While considering your full outfit, avoid heals especially if you are considering having an outdoor photography session. While pregnant your balance point shifts and the uneven surface of a park or the beach can make it very challenging to move around comfortably and it will show through the images.

  • If you are choosing a tight dress or tight pants, remember to check your underwear to avoid unflattering lumps and bumps around your legs and back.
